know More About Atlas Mountains:
The Atlas Mountains are a Maghreb mountain range. It runs for about 2,500 kilometers (1,600 miles) through Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Toubkal, the highest peak in the range, is located in southwestern Morocco and has an elevation of 4,167 meters (13,671 feet). It lies between the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts and the Sahara Desert. Berbers are the primary inhabitants of the Atlas Mountains. In some Berber languages, the words for "mountain" are Adrar and Adras, which are thought to be cognates of the toponym Atlas. The mountains are home to a variety of animals and plants that are unique to Africa, often resembling those found in Europe; many of them are endangered, and some have become extinct.
Anti-AtlasThe Anti-Atlas (Arabic:, Berber languages: Alas Ameyan), Lesser Atlas, or Little Atlas is a mountain range in Morocco that is part of the Atlas Mountains in Africa's northwest. The Anti-Atlas stretches 500 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean in the southwest to the northeast, to the heights of Ouarzazate and further east to the city of Tafilalt. To the south, the range meets the Sahara.
The Anti-Atlas is a barren world of rocky outcrops and lunar landscapes with stark contrasts. The majority of the land is dry and barren, but water collects and runs in isolated areas, forming clear basins. The area's villages are comprised of a few small houses surrounded by palm trees. The Anti-Atlas is sometimes considered distinct from the Atlas mountain system, as the term "anti" implies. |
High AtlasThe High Atlas mountain range in central Morocco rises in the west near the Atlantic coast and stretches east to the Moroccan-Algerian border. It has several peaks over 4,000 m (2.5 mi), including Toubkal (4,167 m (13,671 ft)), North Africa's highest summit, and Ighil m'Goun (4,071 m (13,356 ft)), the range's second major summit. The range abruptly drops in the Atlantic and to the southwest, transitioning to the coast and the Anti-Atlas range. The range descends more gradually to the north, toward Marrakesh. The Draa Valley, which opens southward from the heights of Ouarzazate, cuts through the massif. It is primarily inhabited by Berber people who live in small villages and cultivate the Ourika Valley's high plains.
A hydroelectric dam near Barrage Cavagnac created the artificial lake Lalla Takerkoust. The lake also provides a source of fish for local fishermen. |
Middle Atlas RangeThe Middle Atlas is the northernmost of Morocco's three main Atlas ranges. The range is located north of the High Atlas Mountains, separated by the Moulouya and Oum Er-Rbia rivers, and south of the Rif Mountains, separated by the Sebou River. To the west are Morocco's main coastal plains, which are home to many of the country's major cities, and to the east is the high barren plateau that lies between the Saharan and Tells Atlas mountains. The highest point in the range is the jbel Bou Naceur (3340m). The Middle Atlas receives more rain than the ranges to the south, making it an important water catchment for the coastal plains and for biodiversity. It is home to the majority of the world's Barbary population.
